GAB-aret

One of the best parts of what we do is getting to surround ourselves with the amazing community of genuine and talented individuals that make up the Toronto theatre scene. At every opening night or big event, its nice to know we are going to bump into at least a few familiar faces showing support, and end up in a big group hug (this seriously happens, and we love it).

We had the pleasure of attending one such event recently: a special cabaret we like to call the Gab-aret – the album release of Gabi Epstein‘s album Show Off. If you have scoured our YouTube channel you might know Gabi from this video of her singing the bejeezus out of our song “The Subway Has Everything”. You might have seen her in the Toronto cast of Edges or West Side Story Suite, or in the original company of Toy Story the Musical for Disney Cruises.

If you don’t know of her yet, you should, and there is no better time to familiarize yourself now that her album is out and available on iTunes! The songs she has chosen show off her full spectrum, from perky adorability to jazzy sensuality. Her voice astounds with both its crisp soprano and full-voiced belt. A personal favourite is the sexiest “Cruella De Vil” you will ever hear.

Mad props to her producer John Alcorn who has arranged the songs with brilliant innovation, making some standards sound fresh and new. Also a shout-out to our Subway Songs guitarist, Sydney Galbraith, who was the assistant engineer on the record.

Akiva Romer-Segal, Gabi Epstein, Colleen Dauncey, and Sydney Galbraith at Gabi’s CD release, Nov. 2010

And to quote Reading Rainbow: “You don’t have to take my word for it…” Trust the Toronto Star which picked Show Off as one of their Top 10 holiday gifts for theatre buffs!

Happy Listening!
